Before a federal government employee starts thinking about retirement planning, it is useful to establish a baseline of where things stand today, and to determine what it will take to prepare for a comfortable retirement. It is never too early to begin this process, but no matter if you seek to retire in 20 years or 20 months, it is going to be useful to have a plan. To begin the process, federal employees should, at a minimum, gather together the balance of their Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), as well as any other savings, pensions, debt load, and insurance benefits.
